Teenage troubles
Me and Rosemary (often called ‘Rose’) have been friends
since........ I don’t know when, through nursery, primary and now secondary school.
Summer has made us even better friends, we practically spent every day together
it was amazing.
When we were at primary school we made a pact that no one, no
matter who would ever come between us! And that was a promise.
We meet at the gates of the park and walk to school together
like every other day, even though today it wasn’t any other day it was the
first day at secondary school.
“Amy!” Rosemary exclaims in a tone in which Rosemary has
never used before,
“What’s wrong?” big mistake because today is the day the
start of our friendship being ruined part by part.
“You, you’re later than normal and now I’m going to be late
too!”
“Rose, it’s the same time I meet you all of the time, keep
calm we are not going to be late!” smiling in hope of surrender and
forgiveness. But instead we walk in silence not words spoken until we reached
the school gates were a big maroon sign greeted us saying “Welcome to Everson School”.
Rosemary suddenly grabs my arm and turns around to face me and says:
“I’m sorry! I hate when we argue but this is a new start and
you’re not going to ruin it for me!” at this point she turned and left.
I wonder up the drive, surrounded by people but feeling
alone and upset, as my one and only friend seems to be changing, even growing
up and leaving me behind her! I carry on up the drive lost and alone. At the
schools reception we are beckoned through to a large hall where a group of
quiet year 7’s await to be directed to a classroom to start lessons, when a
tall dark man addresses the students silence falls.
“Welcome to Everson School, I am Steven Jones your head
teacher and this is your head of year…..” he gestures his hand in the direction
of a small lady with fiery red hair and a gentle, pale skin tone, the lady
stands and gives us all a wave. “Her name is Miss Lovell and she is here to
help you with anything, and is always happy to listen and help. Now when I call
your name come and collect your timetable and you can go for a wander around
the schools grounds, feel free to ask teachers and students alike for help if
you need it as we are happy to show you were thing around the school are”
I was one of the first names to be called out because of my
surname which is ‘Barns’ I often get called owl, but I don’t mind because as
Rose said ‘they are smart animals’.
I decide that I will
try and find the library because that is where I often went when I got the
chance at primary school, it was my quiet haven, and on my travels I hope to
find Rose as we need to talk.
A loud bell rings above my head and a stamped of students
rush past me, one of which knocks me over, when the crowd had gone, a kind looking
guy comes and helps me up and asks,
“Are you ok?” I just look at him and nod, but he isn’t
convinced,
“Are you sure?” this time is manage to speak,
“I’m ok just shaken up, it’s my first day you see,” I manage
to smile and he laughs,
“What’s your name?”
“My name is Amy what yours?”
“My name is Jake, I thought I hadn’t saw you around come
with me I will show you around the place its quite big and at least you won’t
get knocked over again!” he leads me off in the opposite direction and starts
telling me which department in where and then asks me,
“Can I look at your time table so I can show you your
classrooms are and the teacher’s names?”
“Thank you, here I wasn’t looking forward to finding the
classes so you’re doing me a favour.” He just looks at me and smiles a large
group of lads walk past and wolf whistle and he just laughed at them and turned
and said,
“They are my friends don’t worry they are just messing
around, right your first lesson is just here and the teacher is really nice she
will not mind if you’re a little late as most of the new students don’t find
their way around until after the second term so you’re ok” I turn and hear a
familiar laugh, it Rose she is walking around with a group of girls in the year
above, I go to speak to her and the girls turned around and said
“I wouldn’t bother your history she has new friends
now!” They carry on in fits of laughter
even Rose is laughing. Jake grabs my arm and says “Was she your friend?”
“Yes but I don’t know any more something’s going on she
hasn’t been very nice to me since this morning?”
“Don’t worry you’ve got me now,” with a smile on his face, I
don’t know what I would have done without him.
